Here's a series of great Erie Canal Postcards from the Collections of Malcolm Horton, Jerry Snyder and Jerry Clearwater. Schenectady Captions by Malcolm Horton...

A painting of one of the warehouses along Dock Street in Schenectady.
Near Schenectady, looking east.
Viewed from Washington Avenue bridge looking west. The Westinghouse Farm Machinery Company office building and shops in the foreground were owned by George Westinghouse, Sr., the father of George Westinghouse, Jr.. The latter invented the airbrake and formed the Westinghouse Electric Company.

Same as above. The street at the left is Edison Avenue and the main gate of the General Electric Co. The office building under construction is an addition to GE Building #2.

Same as above. Note that building #2 is now at its full height of seven stories. Note the brick wall, which still stands today, and the two trolley tracks.

Viewed from the State Street Bridge looking west. The buildings along the left bank of the canal are warehouses for material being shipped on the Erie Canal. The street along the canal on this side was called "Dock Street". On the right side of the canal, was the towpath for use by through traffic on the canal. The lift bridge in the far distance was at railroad street (the terminus of the Schenectady to Saratoga railroad). Beyond the lift bridge is the Washington Avenue bridge.

An artist's painting of the above.

The view from State Street looking westward along Dock Street.

The view from Liberty Street looking eastward. Note the Union Street lift bridge, the New York Central railroad bridge and College Street, wyeing off to the left.

Here's a painting of the Schenectady Locomotive Works. The Canal runs up the center of the painting. The Troy and Schenectady Railroad right-of-way is at the right.
